Making Deck Boards Conform to a Round Column

The time has come to lay the deck and make it conform to a round column. Luckily we have years of experience.

We made a jig out of plywood, laid the decking across it, and cut the deck boards to fit to the stencil.

The finished product with the decks coming together at the South-East corner.

Progress On RBVA's New Shop

Finally... RBVA's new shop is being built! On Monday, the fine folks at Morton Buildings began putting the posts in the ground that will form the base of our shop.

Looks like it's coming along nicely!

Work Continues On The White House of the Confederacy Porch

Work continues on the White House of the Confederacy porch. After a couple of days of rain, the crew got back to work. When we removed the old decking, we found that the joists were spaced too far apart and it was causing the decking to dip and decline.

Our solution was to install additional framing between the existing joists.

Part of the project was to raise the level of the deck, so we added some furring strips to the existing joists.

Those rainy days that I mentioned were spent in the shop priming the tongue and groove decking.

Our apprentice, Chad begins installing decking.

Chad, Jared, and Nick enjoying a very well deserved lunch break. Those smiles reflect their love of what they do in helping maintain our heritage through historic preservation.
